Lightyear Frontier Water: Pumps, Pipes and Reservoirs

How water works in Lightyear Frontier: reservoirs, automated pumps, pipe runs, watering drones and the fixes for a farm that keeps going dry.

Last Updated: 2026-11-06

Water in Lightyear Frontier is a three-part chain: a Water Reservoir stores it, an Automated Water Pump fills it, and pipes carry it to Watering Drones and animal troughs. Build the chain in that order and the farm stops depending on rain.

What are the water constructs?

Construct Role Placement
Water Reservoir Stores water for the network Near the farm, inside the base
Automated Water Pump Fills the reservoir from a water source On a river, lake or shoreline
Connector Pipe Moves water between constructs Between pump, reservoir and drones
Pipe Splitter Splits one line into several At a junction
Pipe Merger Combines several lines into one Before a reservoir or trough
Watering Drone Station Waters a field radius At the edge of the crop strips
Water Trough Supplies animals Inside the pen

The Reservoir is the buffer. Without it, the pump and the drones fight over the same flow, and the field goes dry whenever a drone starts a cycle.

How do you set up water?

  1. Place the Reservoir near the center of the farm, not at the water's edge. The buffer should be close to the consumers.
  2. Place the Automated Water Pump on a river, lake or shoreline. It must touch the water source.
  3. Connect the pump to the reservoir with a Connector Pipe.
  4. Connect the reservoir to each Drone Station with a pipe; use a Splitter if there is more than one.
  5. Fill the reservoir and confirm the water level rises before you plant.

The pump only works when it is placed on water. A pump on dry ground looks identical but produces nothing, which is the most common setup error.

How do watering drones work?

A Watering Drone Station waters the mounds in its radius. The drone draws water from the reservoir through the pipe, flies a cycle, and returns to refill.

  • Coverage: the station has a fixed radius; overlapping two stations wastes water.
  • Drone II: the 1.0 build changes the watering pattern to a 1x2 area and compensates the speed, so a Drone II covers a strip rather than a circle.
  • Power: Drone Stations run on electricity in 1.0, not fuel. A station without power will not launch.

Place stations at the end of a strip, not in the middle. The drone's path is shorter and the coverage is easier to read.

How much water does a farm need?

There is no published per-crop water figure, so plan by buffer:

Farm size Reservoir plan
Up to 8 mounds One Reservoir, one Drone Station
9–20 mounds One Reservoir, two Drone Stations
20+ mounds Two Reservoirs, three or four Drone Stations

Add a reservoir before you add a station. A second station without buffer just drains the first one faster and creates a dry cycle in the middle of the day.

Does rain fill the reservoir?

Rain adds water, and the Reservoir can collect it, but rain is not a plan. The 1.0 weather system changes hourly, and a dry forecast can last long enough to stall a large farm. Use rain as a bonus and the pump as the baseline.

The First Spill achievement tracks 100 liters of water, so early manual watering contributes to it. After that, let the drones do the work.

Why is the farm still dry?

Check these in order:

  1. Reservoir level. Empty means the pump is not running.
  2. Pump placement. It must be on a water source, not near one.
  3. Pipe direction. Pipes move items one way; a reversed pipe moves nothing.
  4. Splitter balance. A splitter feeding three stations may starve the farthest one.
  5. Power. A Drone Station with no electricity does not launch.
  6. Drone coverage. A station that does not overlap the strip waters nothing.

The crops disappeared page → covers the case where the field is already losing plants. If the water chain is fine and the crops are still vanishing, the cause is probably harvest timing or weather, not water.

How do you water animals?

Place a Water Trough inside the pen and connect it to the same reservoir network. Animals drink from the trough; a dry trough stops production and lowers happiness.

Keep the trough on a separate branch from the crop drones. If the farm drains the reservoir first, the animals are the ones that go thirsty.

FAQ

Do crops die without water?

They stop growing, and a crop left dry for more than a couple of in-game days can disappear. Rain counts as water, but it is not reliable enough to replace a reservoir.

Can you water by hand?

Yes, with the Irrigation Hose. It is useful before the reservoir is built and for spot-watering a new strip, but it does not scale past a small farm.

Do Watering Drones need fuel?

No. Drone Stations run on electricity in 1.0. Fuel is for the mech and Combustion Generators.

Can one pump fill two reservoirs?

Yes, with a Pipe Splitter. Watch the levels for a few cycles; if one reservoir drains faster, move the splitter or add a second pump.
