Lightyear Frontier Red Crystal: Location and Best Uses

Where to find red crystal in Lightyear Frontier, how to grind it into dust, and which mech upgrades are worth spending the scarce crystals on first.

Last Updated: 2026-11-06

Red Crystal is the scarcest of the three core upgrade materials. It comes from a small number of deposits in Frostpeak Ridge, it is heavy, and every tool upgrade you want seems to need it. This page covers where to mine it, how to process it, and what to spend it on first.

Where do you find red crystal?

Red Crystal comes from crystal deposits in Frostpeak Ridge. There are two deposit sizes:

Deposit Drop Notes
Small crystal 1 Red Crystal Common on the ridge slopes
Large crystal 3 Red Crystal Chunks Less common; worth a map stamp

The deposits are red and emit a faint glow, which makes them visible against the grey mountain rock. They often sit near iron and coal nodes, so a single Frostpeak trip can supply all three materials.

If you are coming from the starting grassland, follow the road north until the terrain turns cold, then scan the slopes. The first deposits appear before the highest ridges, so you do not need end-game traversal to reach them.

How do you process red crystal?

Raw Red Crystal is processed in a Grinder:

Input Output Time
1 Red Crystal 2 Red Crystal Dust 2:00

Red Crystal Dust is the actual upgrade material. Do not sell or hoard raw crystals if you have a Grinder; the dust is what the Mech Depot consumes.

Raw Red Crystal weighs 2.5 units and has a value of 15. That makes it a poor item to haul in bulk: process it at a forward camp near Frostpeak Ridge and carry the dust home.

What is red crystal used for?

Red Crystal Dust appears in the tool and mech upgrade trees, including:

  • All Tool Range upgrades.
  • All Tool Speed upgrades.
  • Lock-on Targets for the Seed Shooter and Resource Vacuum.
  • Water Tank Capacity for the Irrigation Hose.
  • Hydro Blast for the Irrigation Hose.
  • Harvest Vortex for the Resource Vacuum.

The exact tier costs are visible in the Mech Depot; they scale with the upgrade level. The pattern is consistent: red crystal gates convenience and reach, not raw damage.

What should you spend red crystal on first?

Priority order for most players:

  1. Seed Shooter lock-on. Planting is the action you repeat most; lock-on cuts the aiming time on every mound.
  2. Resource Vacuum range or Harvest Vortex. Fewer passes over a dropped harvest.
  3. Water Tank Capacity. Longer irrigation runs before a refill.
  4. Tool Speed. Good, but only after the reach upgrades.
  5. Cosmetic or niche mods. Last.

Do not spend dust on a tool you rarely equip. A maxed Irrigation Hose is less valuable than a mid-tier Seed Shooter if you plant every session.

How much red crystal do you need?

A full tool upgrade path costs roughly 20 to 30 dust, which means 10 to 15 raw crystals. That is several Frostpeak trips unless you have a forward camp.

A practical target: keep 10 raw crystals or 20 dust in storage. That covers the next upgrade tier without forcing a trip every time the Mech Depot offers something useful.

How do you farm red crystal efficiently?

  • Stamp every large deposit. They are sparse, and a named marker saves a repeat search.
  • Build a forward camp in Frostpeak Ridge with a Grinder and a Storage Shed. Process on site; haul dust, not rock.
  • Combine the trip with iron and coal. The three materials share a region and a route.
  • Use the Resource Scanner before you leave; it marks deposits you have already discovered.

The map resources page → lists the other Frostpeak materials. The steel guide → covers the iron and coal chain that shares the same trip.

FAQ

Is red crystal renewable?

Deposits respawn after an in-game timer, so a stamped route is reusable. It is not a one-time resource, but the respawn is slow enough that you should not rely on a single deposit.

Can you buy red crystal?

The merchant's rotating stock occasionally includes processed materials, but it is not a reliable source. Mining is the intended route.

What is red crystal dust used for?

Dust is the upgrade currency for tool range, speed, lock-on and water capacity. Raw crystal is only an intermediate.

Is red crystal needed for steel?

No. Steel is iron plus coal. Red crystal is a separate upgrade chain that happens to share the Frostpeak Ridge region.
