Lightyear Frontier Automation Guide: Pipes and Layouts

How Lightyear Frontier automation works in 1.0: Automation Pipes, storage filters, three auto-recipes per construct, energy, and three layouts that work.

Last Updated: 2026-11-06

Automation in Lightyear Frontier 1.0 is built on Automation Pipes. The old Automator is gone, pipes can pull directly from Storage, and every Crafting Construct can hold three automated recipes. The system is simpler than it looks: one source, one machine, one output, repeated.

When does automation unlock?

Automation starts at Milestone 4. That is earlier than in Early Access, and it is the point where the game stops being a manual fetch loop.

The first unlocks are:

  • Automation Pipes to move items between constructs.
  • Storage Outputs, which let a shed feed a pipe instead of only accepting items.
  • Resource Filters, which decide what a shed accepts or denies.
  • Auto Craft, which lets a construct keep working without a player.

You do not need a giant base to start. One furnace, two sheds and two pipes are enough to learn the system.

How do Automation Pipes work?

A pipe connects two constructs and moves items in one direction. The basic rules:

Rule Detail
Direction Pipes pull from a source and push to a destination
Storage A shed with Output enabled can feed a pipe
Filters Deny and Accept lists control what passes
Splitters One source can feed several destinations
Mergers Several sources can feed one destination
Power Pipes do not need power; the machines do

The most common mistake is pointing a pipe the wrong way. If a furnace is not filling, check the source shed's Output toggle before you rebuild the line.

How do storage filters work?

Each Storage Shed has a Resource Filter tab with Deny and Accept lists. The practical pattern is one material per shed:

  • Input shed: Accept only the recipe inputs.
  • Output shed: Accept only the finished product.
  • Dump shed: Deny nothing, and let overflow collect there.

A shed that accepts everything becomes a mixing bin, and mixed bins stall machines because the pipe cannot guarantee the right ratio. Filters are the difference between an automated line and a decorative one.

How does energy work?

Energy is a global pool. Generators add to it, machines draw from it, and when supply meets demand the base runs at the Energized rate, roughly two and a half times faster than an unpowered line.

Generation options:

  • Combustion Generator burns fuel. It is the early workhorse.
  • Solar Generator produces during the day without fuel.
  • Higher generator tiers add output; the 1.0 patch increased generator energy output.

Do not build three generators for one furnace. Build one generator, watch the Energy meter, and add capacity when the meter is pinned. The best oil for fuel page → covers what to burn.

What are three automation layouts that work?

1. The steel line

Component Setting
Input shed Accept Iron Bar, Coal
Furnace Recipe: Steel Bar
Output shed Accept Steel Bar

Pipe the input shed into the furnace, the furnace into the output shed, and leave one tile of space for a second furnace later. This line runs for the entire mid-game.

2. The seed line

Component Setting
Input shed Accept harvested crops
Seed Extractor Recipe: seeds from the current crop
Output shed Accept seeds

The seed line is what makes a large farm sustainable. Without it, you are replanting from the same harvest and slowly running out.

3. The oil line

Component Setting
Input shed Accept Rabbage or Polyberry
Oil Presser Recipe: oil
Output shed Accept oil
Generator Fed by the output shed

Oil feeds the generator that powers the press. Once the loop is running, it is self-sustaining apart from crop input. Add an Oil Presser III when throughput becomes the bottleneck.

How do you troubleshoot a stalled line?

Check in this order:

  1. Is the source shed empty? The line cannot run without input.
  2. Is Output enabled on the source shed? This is the most common failure.
  3. Does the filter accept the item? A Deny list silently blocks it.
  4. Is the destination full? A full output shed backs up the entire line.
  5. Is the machine powered? Check the global Energy meter.
  6. Is the recipe selected? A construct with no auto-recipe idles.

The 1.0 UI shows missing inputs on the construct panel, which makes step one much faster than in Early Access.

FAQ

Do pipes need power?

No. Pipes are passive; the machines they connect need Energy. A powered furnace with unpowered pipes still runs.

Can one construct craft three different recipes?

Yes. 1.0 allows up to three auto-recipes per Crafting Construct, and the construct skips a recipe when its inputs are missing instead of stalling the queue.

Do drones use fuel?

No. Drones run on electricity in 1.0. Fuel is for the mech and Combustion Generators.

What is the best first automation project?

A single furnace line for the item you craft most. Throughput on one item beats a wide network that handles everything at low volume.
