Lightyear Frontier Crop Locations: Where Each Seed Grows

Where to find every Lightyear Frontier crop seed by region, how the Seed Extractor and Seed Splicer work, and what to do when a seed will not unlock.

Last Updated: 2026-11-06

Crop locations in Lightyear Frontier are region-locked. You cannot buy Wheat seeds in Frostpeak Ridge or find Honeybottle in the starting grassland. This page lists which region supplies which seed, how to turn a wild plant into a farm crop, and what blocks a seed from appearing.

Which region has which crop?

Region Crops Other resources
Outset Grasslands Wheat, Polyberry, Rabbage, Caroot Wood, Plant Fiber, Stone, Aluminum
Frostpeak Ridge Honeybottle, Lumbloom Red Crystal, Iron, Coal
Hexagon Valley Chromaize, Zappertwig Yellow Crystal, Copper, Nickel
Sandswept Highlands (1.0) New 1.0 crops New minerals, ruins, Floaters
Hollow Marsh (1.0) New 1.0 crops Marsh plants, Starfall Tree materials

The starting grassland is the only region you need for the first three crops. Frostpeak Ridge and Hexagon Valley are mid-game trips; the two 1.0 regions are reachable early but tuned for late-game farming.

How do you unlock a crop?

There are three routes, and they are not interchangeable:

  1. Wild harvest. Find the plant in its region, harvest it, and keep the seed. This is how most players get their first Wheat and Polyberry.
  2. Seed Extractor. Feed harvested produce into the Extractor to produce more seeds. This is the sustainable route once you have one plant of each crop.
  3. Seed Splicer. Combine seeds for variants and mutations. The Splicer Mk2 and Mk3 are unlocked through Ulf's neighbor questline in 1.0.

The Extractor is the important one. A single wild harvest is enough to start a seed loop; you do not need to keep scavenging the same plant.

Where do you find the first seeds?

Leave the landing site and scan the ground cover. Wheat and Polyberry are the first plants you will see in the Outset Grasslands; Rabbage and Caroot appear a short mech drive from the initial clearing.

A reliable early route:

  1. Clear the slime ring around the landing site.
  2. Harvest every wild Wheat and Polyberry you pass; keep at least five of each seed.
  3. Build the Seed Extractor as soon as the build menu allows.
  4. Plant a small Wheat field and convert the harvest into seed stock.
  5. Only then push toward Frostpeak Ridge for Rabbage and Caroot.

Do not eat your seed stock. It is tempting to turn every harvest into food or delivery credit, but a farm without seeds is a reset.

Where are the Frostpeak Ridge crops?

Honeybottle and Lumbloom grow in Frostpeak Ridge, the cold region with iron, coal and red crystal. The two crops have four-day grow times and the highest oil values in the core set.

The route matters: Frostpeak Ridge is also where you find Red Crystal, so combine the trip. Bring the Resource Vacuum, clear a path to the crystal deposits, and harvest Honeybottle and Lumbloom on the way back. The red crystal guide → covers the deposit types.

Where are the Hexagon Valley crops?

Chromaize and Zappertwig grow in Hexagon Valley, alongside copper, nickel and yellow crystal. Chromaize is the three-day Nitrogenic crop; Zappertwig is the four-day Nitrogenic crop with a strong oil value.

Hexagon Valley is the best source of Nickel, which gates a lot of mid-game crafting. Plan one trip that covers seeds, nickel and yellow crystal rather than three separate runs. The nickel guide → has the deposit locations.

Where are the 1.0 crops?

The four new crops grow in Sandswept Highlands and Hollow Marsh. Both regions are open from the start of a 1.0 save, but their content is tuned for the late game: Sandswept Highlands has hostile Floaters, and Hollow Marsh is a longer traversal.

The practical approach is to scout both regions once you have a stable base, harvest one of each new plant, and bring the seeds home. Do not try to farm them in place until you have water and delivery infrastructure nearby.

Why is a crop seed not appearing?

Four common causes:

  • Wrong region. The seed only spawns in its native region. Check the table above.
  • Region not restored. Clearing the slime and restoring the area changes what grows there. If the region still looks corrupted, the seed stock may not have refreshed.
  • Season or weather gate. Some plants are easier to spot after a weather change; the 1.0 dynamic weather shifts the visuals every few hours.
  • You already harvested it. Wild plants do not respawn instantly. Wait a few in-game days or use the Seed Extractor on an existing harvest.

If the plant exists but your farm field is empty, that is a different problem: see crops disappeared →.

FAQ

Can you buy seeds from the merchant?

The merchant's stock is limited and rotates. The reliable source is the Seed Extractor, which turns a harvested crop into more seeds without a vendor.

Do crops grow in every region?

Each crop grows on any mound once you have the seed; the region restriction applies to where the seed is found, not where it can be planted. Soil type still decides the yield.

How many seeds should you keep?

Keep at least ten of each crop you plan to rotate. A full three-strip farm consumes seeds faster than a single strip, and running out mid-cycle breaks the rotation.

Are the new 1.0 crops required for progression?

No. The core eight crops cover every soil type and every early milestone. The new crops are optional value and variety, not a gate.
