Lightyear Frontier Best Base Location: 3 Strong Sites

The best base location in Lightyear Frontier, scored on water, flat ground, resources and delivery distance, plus the best starting site and a build layout.

Last Updated: 2026-11-06

The best base location in Lightyear Frontier is the western Outset Grasslands river bend: flat ground, water within pipe distance, a short drive to the landing site and enough space for twenty-plus mounds. It is not the richest resource site, but it is the best balance of the four things a base needs.

What makes a base location good?

Four criteria decide everything:

Criterion Why it matters Weight
Water Drones, animals and crops all depend on it 5
Flat buildable ground Slopes break building snapping and pipe runs 5
Resource access Iron, coal, nickel and crystal runs 3
Delivery distance Every shipment passes through the cannon 3

Water and flat ground are weighted highest because they cannot be fixed. Resources can be hauled; a bad slope cannot be flattened without a massive Landscaper project.

A fifth, softer criterion: the homestead boundary. The 1.0 Coziness buff Homestead Swiftness gives +50 percent movement speed inside the homestead. A compact base keeps you inside the buff while you work, which is worth more than a sprawling layout.

Where is the best base location?

Site A: Western Outset Grasslands river bend

Score: 16/20 — best overall.

  • Water 5/5: a river bend with a deep pool, close enough for a short pipe run.
  • Flat 5/5: a wide meadow with few rocks and no cliff edge.
  • Resources 2/5: no iron or red crystal; aluminum and stone only.
  • Delivery 4/5: a short mech drive from the landing site and the first cannon.

This is the site to pick if you want one base for the whole campaign. It supports a large farm, a compact crafting row and a reservoir without terraforming. The weakness is material runs: Frostpeak Ridge is a real trip, so build a second forward camp later rather than moving the main base.

How to find it: from the landing site, follow the river west until it bends around a stand of trees. The flat meadow on the inside of the bend is the build site. Stamp it before you place the first foundation.

Site B: Frostpeak Ridge foothills

Score: 14/20 — best for crafting.

  • Water 3/5: a mountain stream, but the pipe run is longer.
  • Flat 3/5: terraces require Landscaper work.
  • Resources 5/5: iron, coal and red crystal within walking distance.
  • Delivery 3/5: a longer haul to the cannon.

Pick this as a second base, not the first. It is the right place for a smelting and steel operation, and it cuts the iron/coal commute to almost nothing. The slope is the trade-off: budget time for flattening before you build.

Site C: Hexagon Valley rim

Score: 13/20 — best for electronics.

  • Water 2/5: scarce; you will rely on reservoirs and rain.
  • Flat 4/5: wide plateaus with clean edges.
  • Resources 5/5: nickel, copper and yellow crystal.
  • Delivery 2/5: the longest cannon run of the three.

This is a specialist site. Build a forward crafting camp here once nickel and yellow crystal become the bottleneck, and keep the farm in the grassland. Do not try to run a full farm on the rim; the water situation makes it fragile.

What is the best starting location?

The tutorial clearing is the best starting location and a bad permanent one. It is flat, close to the landing site and safe, which makes it ideal for the first hour. It is also far from water and iron, which is why you should move once Milestone 4 unlocks automation.

Use the clearing for:

  • The first Delivery Cannon.
  • A small Wheat and Polyberry field.
  • The first Storage Shed and Crafting Construct.

Then move to Site A before you build the permanent farm. Moving early costs a few foundations; moving late costs a full rebuild.

What is the best place to build the farm itself?

Inside the chosen base, put the farm on the north side of the homestead and the crafting row on the south side, with storage between them. Reasons:

  1. Crops need the most space and the most sunlight; the north field stays clear of the crafting shadows.
  2. Crafting constructs produce the most visual clutter; keeping them south keeps the farm readable.
  3. Storage in the middle shortens every pipe run.

A compact layout for a 24-mound farm:

Zone Contents
North 24 mounds in three strips, one per soil type
Center Two Storage Sheds (seed and produce), Water Reservoir
South Furnace, Crafting Construct, Oil Presser, Combustion Generator
East Drone Station and animal pen
West Delivery Cannon and trailer parking

Keep the whole layout inside the homestead boundary so Homestead Swiftness stays active while you work.

How do you move a base without losing progress?

  1. Build the new Storage Sheds first.
  2. Move resources by trailer, one material per trip.
  3. Rebuild the crafting row before the farm; production pays for the move.
  4. Move the Delivery Cannon last.
  5. Keep the old base as a forward camp until the new one is self-sufficient.

FAQ

Does the game have coordinates?

Lightyear Frontier does not show X/Y coordinates on the map. Use landmarks and nameable stamps instead; a text stamp is more useful than a coordinate pair in this game.

Can you build more than one base?

Yes. There is no base limit. Most players keep one main farm and one forward crafting camp near the resource region they are currently mining.

Does the base location affect coziness?

Coziness comes from decorations and the homestead boundary, not from the biome. A decorated base in any region can reach the same Coziness tiers.

Is it worth building in the new 1.0 regions?

As a forward camp, yes. As a main base, only if you have a water plan; both new regions are harsher than the starting grassland.
