How to Make Steel in Lightyear Frontier: Recipe and Tips
The Lightyear Frontier steel recipe: iron bar plus coal in a Furnace, the exact ratio, where to find both ores, and what to build first with your steel.
Steel in Lightyear Frontier is a two-step chain: smelt iron ore into an Iron Bar, then smelt that bar with coal into a Steel Bar. The ratio is the part that catches people out. One bar needs three coal, and coal is also the fuel you are tempted to burn in generators.

What is the steel recipe?
| Input | Amount | Station | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iron Bar | 1 | Furnace | 2:00 |
| Coal | 3 | Furnace | 2:00 |
| Steel Bar | 1 | Furnace | 2:00 |
The Furnace must be at the tier that supports steel smelting; the recipe unlocks with the steel-technology milestone. Version 1.0 rebalanced the milestone order, so if an older guide says "Milestone 10", check the build menu rather than trusting the number.
Iron Bars come from iron ore in the same Furnace. If you are starting from raw ore, the full chain is: mine iron and coal in Frostpeak Ridge, smelt iron into bars, then smelt bars with coal into steel.
Where do you get iron and coal?
Both are Frostpeak Ridge resources. Iron nodes and coal nodes cluster on the rocky slopes, usually within sight of each other, which makes a single trip efficient.
- Iron is the grey metallic node; it also drops from some rocky outcrops.
- Coal is the dark node; it looks similar to stone at a distance, so scan before mining.
Do not burn coal in a Combustion Generator once steel is on the horizon. Crop oil is a renewable generator fuel; coal is a steel ingredient with a fixed ratio. The best oil for fuel page → covers the alternative.
How much coal do you need?
Three coal per Steel Bar. Plan around the number of bars you actually need:
| Steel Bars | Iron Bars | Coal |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 3 |
| 5 | 5 | 15 |
| 10 | 10 | 30 |
| 20 | 20 | 60 |
A single Frostpeak trip with a full mech inventory usually covers 10 to 15 bars. If you are building a Steel Frame structure, double the estimate.
What should you build with steel first?
Steel is used in four places:
- Steel Electronics — the electronics tier that unlocks better constructs.
- Steel Frame — structural building pieces.
- Steel Parts — mech and machine components.
- Spring — a component for repair kits and mechanisms.
Priority order for most players:
- Steel Electronics first, because it unlocks the next production tier.
- Steel Parts second, for the mech upgrades that speed up everything else.
- Steel Frame when you are ready to build the permanent base.
- Superior Repair Kit as needed; do not stockpile springs early.
How do you automate steel?
Steel is one of the best early automation targets because the inputs are simple and the demand is steady:
- Put a Storage Shed next to the Furnace, set to Accept Iron Bar and Coal.
- Pipe the shed into the Furnace.
- Pipe the Furnace output into a second shed set to Accept Steel Bar.
- Add a second Furnace only when the first is consistently starved of input, not when it is idle.
The 1.0 Automation Pipes can pull directly from Storage, so you do not need a belt network. A two-shed, one-furnace line is enough for the entire mid-game. The automation guide → has the layout.
Do not set the input shed to Accept "all ores". Coal, iron ore and stone will mix, and the Furnace will stall on the wrong recipe. Filters are the whole game.
Why is your furnace not making steel?
Four common causes:
- Missing coal. The recipe needs three per bar; a shed with two coal will stall.
- Wrong furnace tier. Steel smelting requires the steel-technology unlock.
- Filter mismatch. The input shed is rejecting coal.
- Output blocked. The output shed is full or filtered to exclude steel.
Check the construct's recipe panel first; it shows the missing input explicitly in 1.0.
FAQ
Can you make steel without coal?
No. The recipe requires coal as an input, not just as fuel. There is no charcoal substitute in the 1.0 build.
Where is the best place to smelt steel?
Frostpeak Ridge, next to the iron and coal nodes. Hauling ore to the grassland doubles the transport cost for no benefit.
How many steel bars do you need for the campaign?
Roughly 30 to 50 for progression and base building, depending on how much you automate. A full Steel Frame base can push that higher.
Is steel used in the mech?
Yes, through Steel Parts and springs. The exact tier requirements are visible in the Mech Depot upgrade menu.
